A dormouse in the cutlery drawer

The other day, we opened the cutlery drawer in Ditte’s gîte and found a dormouse fast asleep in hibernation. A perfect spot, to be fair: well insulated, with soft rounded corners… very cozy.

But at some point, we really do want to use that cutlery drawer ourselves. And it’s not exactly hygienic either. So the dormouse had to go:

We carefully picked it up and released the sleepy little mouse outside in nature.
The next day, we opened the drawer again — and there it was, back in the cutlery tray!
So once more, we picked it up and released it a good distance from the house, and yes, luckily, it stayed away.

Still, for weeks afterwards, we opened the cutlery drawer very, very carefully…
